Visit to the Arboretum Domanial de Pézanin

It is in the hollow of the soft and wooded hills of the Saône-et-Loire, on the borders of the Beaujolais and Charolais mountains, that the Arboretum of Pézanin nestles. Now more than a century old, it was created by Philippe de Vilmorin, botanist and frequent traveler and founder of a line well known to gardeners. This arboretum then had the ambition to study the acclimatization of forest and ornamental species. War and storms have punctuated its history, marked by periods of abandonment and significant damage. Taken over in 1969 by the National Office of Forests, the Arboretum was gradually reconstituted and fitted out to accommodate the public. Today, the Arboretum welcomes nearly 450 species or varieties of trees and shrubs from around the world on its 27 hectares, which are layered around a 4-hectare body of water.

Pézanin Arboretum

European Gallery of Forest and Wood This region of medium mountains, located northeast of the Massif Central, is subject to a dual climatic, oceanic and continental influence. Winters are very cold there and there are 90 days of frost on average per year. When the cold bites and the sun is there, what more beautiful spectacle than that of a tree taken by the frost and which sparkles in the sun?

Th. Chassepoux The Arboretum occupies the two sides of a valley, the bottom of which is mainly occupied by a pond.

Th. Chassepoux A path called "Le circuit bleu" invites you to take a leisurely stroll around the pond, with a 1.1 km loop. During its journey, the visitor will come across a giant sequoia, a tulip tree, a Nothofagus, bald cypresses ... So many trees, young or old, which coexist harmoniously by sharing the food of the sky and the sunlight.

Office National des Forêts The 1.5 km long "red circuit" is steeper. It walks through the valley from which it follows the natural slope. This path winds between clearings and forest areas. There is no shortage of beautiful subjects: Chicot from Canada, Pterocarya with ash leaves…

Th. Chassepoux With a keen sense of pedagogy, the Gallery invites you to discover and understand wood and the forest environment. What better tribute for a tree than the attention paid by young children leaning over the past years?
